In Ayurveda water has been categorized into 5 types:

  1. Ojas Shakti – Water that helps in building immunity 
  2. Raktas Shakti – Water that helps in detoxifying the body

  4. Prana Shakti – Water that helps in refreshing the body and mind

The principle quantities that should be taken into consideration are:

  1. Water should always be drunk in an equal amount to its weight and not a smaller quantity, so drinking 1 cup of water equals 1 pound of body weight.
  2. Water should be taken in small amounts, 5 to 10 ounces per hour or 2 to 3 liters per day.
  3. Drinking water before food is always recommended for the best absorption of nutrients. If you’re doing a juice fast, juicing fruits and vegetables is one of the most useful ways to get loads of nutrients from healthy sources. Water is central to life and calorie restriction causes stress on the endocrine system which then contributes to aging and disease.

There are three types of Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each has a different body constitution and needs to drink water accordingly.

  1. Vata people need to drink more water than others because they have a fast metabolism and tend to lose fluids easily due to their dry skin that doesn’t perspire much. 
  2. Pitta people need less water because they have a slower metabolism but their bodies can get too hot if they don’t replenish the fluids lost through sweat. 
  3. Kapha people need to drink less water because they have slow metabolisms and produce more mucus which absorbs excess moisture from the body.

Many people wrongly believe that bottled water is healthier than tap water because bottled water is “purified” but tap water is not. The FDA regulates the bottled water industry and has strict standards for bottlers of water to meet. However, the FDA does not regulate tap water.

Tap Water can be more readily regulated because it is regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 (SDWA) which makes sure that all public drinking water meets federal quality standards. While bottled waters are regulated by a different government agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has more lax requirements.

The FDA only requires that bottled water be sealed, have a label on it, and must be grown in a sustainable way.”There are no federal standards for tap water.” Bottled Water often costs more than tap water because of stricter labeling requirements. However, bottled water is also regulated by the FDA and must meet certain quality standards for health to ensure safety.
