How the Natural Medicine of Ayurveda Helps Heal Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bone thinning and deterioration. It is a major cause of bone fractures and disability. Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medicine, can be used as an effective treatment to prevent and cure osteoporosis.

From an Ayurvedic point of view, osteoporosis is caused by too much or too little of the vata dosha, just as acid reflux or skin rashes are caused by too much pitta energy and mucus congestion is caused by too much kapha.

What is Osteoporosis, How Does it Affect Your Body, and Why is Ayurveda a Good Option for Healing?

According to the National Institute on Aging, Osteoporosis is a disease that makes bones weak enough to break easily. Most of the time, this happens to bones in the hip, spine, and wrist. Osteoporosis is called a “silent disease” because you might not notice any changes until a bone breaks.

Osteoporosis Natural Treatment

Osteoporosis is the most common type of skeletal disorder in the United States. It affects more than 8 million Americans annually, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. The main risk factors for this disease are age, smoking, low calcium intake and low physical activity levels.

Ayurveda offers benefits such as healthy weight management, reduced stress levels and improved sleep quality among others. Some of the health benefits that are associated with ayurveda include: The National Osteoporosis Foundation has stated that Ayurvedic herbs can improve bone health. Calcified bone tissue, calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood, and other physical properties are all affected by Ayurveda.

Why Ayurveda is Effective at Healing Osteoporosis

Ayurveda is a traditional Indian system of healing that has been used for centuries. It is a holistic approach to health, which uses natural remedies, herbs, and essential oils to help the body heal itself. The herb ashwagandha has been found to be especially helpful in this area and here are the benefits:

Helps bones get stronger

Scientists have found that ashwagandha increases the expression of certain genes that help increase the number of osteoblasts, which are cells that make bones, and genes that make the bones harder. It also helps osteoblasts live longer and stops proteins from making inflammation worse.

Deterioration and osteoporosis are stopped

Your body’s bone density is always kept up by a process of replacing bones. While osteoblasts help make new bones, osteoclasts help break down old bones and release minerals back into the blood. This is called resorption. As the amount of estrogen in your body drops, especially after menopause, your bones break down more than they grow. This is what makes osteoporosis happen. Studies suggest that ashwagandha extract protects all of the following alterations, possibly due to its estrogen-like withanolides.

Loss of mineral density makes bones more brittle. Because osteoporosis patients have high levels of alkaline phosphatase, they lose calcium and phosphorus through their urine.

Because of mineral loss, cortical bones lose density and can’t support the body. The spongy or cancellous bones that aid movement get worse as their microarchitecture expands. This reduces the bones’ shock-absorbing ability. The long bones’ weight-bearing metaphyseal portion is also eliminated. This renders bones brittle under pressure. Because of these factors, biomechanical strength drops.

Stress and inflammation can cause bones to break down

Stress makes cortisol, which is bad for bones because it speeds up bone loss and slows down the rate at which new bones form.

Osteoporosis is also caused by inflammation, which is made worse by having too much cortisol. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are the proteins that cause inflammation, also control how osteoblasts and osteoclasts work.

Ashwagandha has been shown to lower cortisol levels by as much as 28% in 60 days and break the cycle of stress and inflammation.

Helps bones get better and makes new ones

It has been found that withaferin A in ashwagandha blocks the action of proteasomes or protein complexes that break down other proteins and thus promotes healing after injury and increases bone mineral density.

Treatment with ashwagandha showed the following results:

  • Increase in the expression of the bone-producing genes, especially in the femur, and regeneration of cortical bones
  • Increase in the number of pre-osteoblast cells (bone-forming cells) in the bone marrow
  • Improvement in the micro-architecture in the spongy part of the long bones, which help support your movements
  • Increase in the biomechanical strength of the vertebrae and the femur
  • Decrease in the expression of the osteoclast genes that promote resorption
  • Regeneration of cortical bones at drill-hole sites in the femur bone and bridging of all cortical gaps with woven bone

How to Take Ayurvedic Supplements to Help Heal Osteoporotic Symptoms

Ayurvedic supplements are often used to heal osteoporotic symptoms. However, these supplements can be used by anyone suffering from osteoarthritis. They can also help with pain relief and inflammation. They also help with healing the body, which will provide relief from joint pain and stiffness.

The most important thing that you should know when taking ayurvedic supplements is that they should be taken along with a healthy diet and exercise regimen.

Most people take ashwagandha as a capsule or powder that they can take at any time of the day. You might want to make it part of your nightly routine to help you sleep better. You could also try taking it in the morning if that works better for you.

But here are some delicious recipe to incorporate Ashwagandha to your cooking:

  • Two cups of raw almonds are needed
  • 2 teaspoons of ground ashwagandha
  • If needed, 1 teaspoon of ghee or coconut oil

Add almonds to a food processor or a strong blender and start blending at a low or medium-low speed. Mix until you get a smooth butter. This might take between 10 and 30 minutes. At the end, add the ashwagandha powder. You might have to stop to scrape the blender’s sides.

If the almonds seem dry or don’t blend well, a small amount of oil like ghee or coconut oil can help. Refrigerate in a container that won’t let air in.

  • Ashwagandha Powder
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Milk – I’m using almond milk, but you can use any kind of plain milk.
  • Cinnamon Stick
  • Sweetener – I’m using maple syrup but you can use honey, sugar or any kind of sweetener.

  • This recipe is extremely easy and doesn’t need any special utensils or equipment.
  • You simply heat the milk.
  • Add ALL the ingredients and whisk.
  • Let this simmer for a few minutes (this is the most important step).
  • Then let it boil once.
  • Transfer to cups and enjoy warm

Ashwagandha is a natural option that has been shown to be safe for people to use. It might slow down the wear and tear on joints, ease pain and swelling, and help people with osteoarthritis move their joints better.

Ashwagandha is recommended by Ayurveda as a way to improve overall strength and vitality, including bone strength. Recent research seems to point in the same direction.

Ashwagandha is thought to be safe for most people, but you should talk to a doctor before trying it for the first time. For more Ayurvedic related topics, click here!
