Ayurveda: The Healing Powers of Music

Is music the food of mental health? Dr. Gabor Mate says that we are born into music, our mother’s heartbeat is the first rhythm we react to, and it continues to soothe and stimulate us throughout our lives. But did you know that it can also help with healing? In this blog post, we’ll explore the healing powers of music and how it can be used to improve your health and wellbeing. Stay tuned!

Sound is an essential part of Ayurveda. It is believed that when the body and mind are in harmony, they can function at their highest level. This harmony can be disturbed by imbalances in the body and mind, leading to disease. You can use sound therapy to restore balance and promote healing.

Enlightenment Through Sound

Sound is a paramount tool, which can be leveraged for accurate communication. We can create sound by talking in different languages. However, language is not only used to converse, but it is also used to transfer vibrations. Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-European language of India, means ‘refined’ or ‘purified’. Sanskrit is not just a language but also gives meaning to the word and concept; some words does not translates to another language because it has a deep sense.

There are thousands of stories that can prove the power of sounds. The ancient world is brim-full with actual events- that prove the versatility of sound.

There was a weapon used by using the power of sound. Just utilizing a sound, they’d be able to create positive or negative energy. For example, the Brahmashirsha Astra or Bhramastra was a weapon that they used for creation or destruction. It can be compared to nuclear power: to kill or to help.

There’s this one story by Master Paramahamsa Nithyananda that he told in his sermon titled “Power of Sound” he said that he once witnessed a person who broke a coconut into pieces just by making a “hammer” sound using his tongue. That’s how powerful the sound is. He also shared a festival in Sri Lanka, where you can walk on fire by listening to music. This music or chanting will motivate you that you can do everything if you believe in yourself. Before performing the ceremony, you must meditate for ten days listening to vibrations or music. That way, you are preparing yourself to walk on fire. Listening to music can alleviate your mind and body to a different consciousness or plane of existence through sound. Vibration can lift your body and mind.

If you’re lacking sleep or too tired, your logic becomes imbalanced. If you suppress something too much, it will explode. Or if you hide an emotion for too long, conflagration with violence is the outcome. If you’re feeling this way, use the vibrations and feel the power of sound! Don’t suppress the anger but be authentic to your feelings. If you’re not authentic with your feelings or emotion, it will express them in a repulsive way. You have to release, then feel, that, the anger is gradual in its dissipation.

As sound enters into soulfulness, it lets you also enter into the energy field that helps you be enlighten. When you create a particular sound, it will occupy your mind. So be a good listener. Listening indicates that you care about the individuals with whom you socialize. It helps establish rapport and shows that you have an interest in what others have to say. Listening is a reciprocal skill that leaders can model; when you are a good listener, people will tend to listen to you with intent.

According to Sanskrit, you will learn when you talk to others. 25% of new things will happen to you when you speak loudly. New things will happen to you when you speak to others because it will allow you to experience something. You will also realize that you are expressing new things, and you will see that you will be talking intelligently.

One great way of using music as a healing tool is to meditate. Meditation is a method of training attention and awareness and achieving a mentally clear and emotionally calm, and stable state. An individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to achieve a mentally clear, emotionally calm, and stable state. Follow the steps to use this technique effectively:

  1. Sit and close your eyes. Opening your eyes may cause you distraction
  2. The sound you will make has to come from a deep level or the navel. Not on the throat. Just create a deep vibration or hum. Create intensely but do not shout.
  3. Then, reduce the sound. You will feel that your going to transport into a new trance state.

Try this technique for ten days, and you will feel the suffocation is not there. You will feel comfortable sitting with yourself and feel the inner space much more than you can feel normal. Suddenly, you will see that you will be on a different plane of existence.

There’s no qualification for enlightenment, said Master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. Enlightenment is always a lottery. It is just a blessing. Come to think of it. If you gamble all your money in a card game, there are no qualifications required to win. Except that you just got lucky, and that’s it. So don’t try to look too hard for a reason. Accept yourself fully, and you will be enlightened.

Anubhava in Sanskrit means that when the ability excites you, even when the object comes in contact does not excite you anymore. Anubhuti means when you are at the peak of the valley, and then it falls. An example is if you touch all types of fire only to know that all fire will burn. When you touch one fire, you will realize that all fire will burn. And if you witnessed someone who felt the fire and got burnt and realized that all fire would burn, it’s called Paramahamsa sthithi (the realization of the ultimate truth).

When you are authentic to your emotions, going through all your emotions at the peak of the valley is consciously not justified. For example, if you want to come in contact with the object, whether eating what you want to eat or feeling something, your body is vibrating with desire. You are at the peak of your valley. And when you get in contact with the object you want to experience or eat, the excitement happens. Suddenly, from the peak, it slowly dissolves. But if you are peak-oriented or young, you will try to postpone or curse the valley, which is wrong because everything is taken with the wrong reason; resulting in destructive emotions. If you want something, just take that time to enjoy, intensely go through the whole thing, and let go when it’s time to let go.

You live with too many fantasies, fears, and guilt that are not part of your life. Just renounce those things. If you surrender those things, it will liberate you. Add life to years; then, you will see that you’ll add years to your life. Adding “life” to your years means being more alive through Ayurveda, exercise, a great diet, and everything that will make you happy.

There’s this verse in Sanskrit: one listens to a string instrument, and they compose a gentle sound, thus achieving the ultimate consciousness. The same essence with going authentically with the peak and the valley. While listening to some sound, sit and go to the backbone or depth of the music. Especially Indian music is for meditation.

When you meditate, try to listen to the rhythm and clear your thoughts. Just be present with the listening and hearing inside your head and feel the music. Music is not coming from the outside of your head. It is from the inside of your head. The music that you will hear is an experience. Another thing is anything that comes out of enlightenment will take you to the enlightenment. If your music comes from an enlightened consciousness, it’ll take you to the same enlightenment experience.
