Ashwagandha in Ayurveda: A Traditional Herb for Modern Times

What is Aswagandha?

Ashwagandha’s roots can be found up to 3 feet deep underground, which helps them grow quickly and bloom prolifically.

The roots can be ground into a powder for use as an herbal supplement or even taken as a tea with honey to help boost your immune system and provide some natural energy boosts during the day. Ashwagandha is classified as a member of the ginger family, but it is not related to ginger. However, both plants share the same pharmacological properties. The leaves and roots have been traditionally used in India as a stimulant and aphrodisiac. They can boost mental functions and reduce stress levels by providing a sense of well-being.

Origin of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a member of the ginger family and has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years. It is native to India and Nepal, but also grows in other parts of the world. Ashwagandha is believed to have originated from the Himalayan mountains. It’s been used in Ayurveda and Siddha medicine for centuries. The root of this plant has been used as a remedy for various ailments such as fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, arthritis, and inflammation.

It has gained popularity in recent years due to its ability to improve memory and concentration. It is also popular in Ayurveda for its high content of iron. It’s believed to increase red blood cells which help the body maintain optimal levels of oxygen in the cells. It also has a balancing effect on the system and may serve as an antidote for those who consume large amounts of alcohol or sugar. Particularly, Ashwagandha root is harvested in the fall and dried. It has a woody and fibrous appearance, smells of earthy, musty or floral notes, and tastes slightly sweet or earthy. The root needs to be very finely ground before being consumed by individuals.

The plant has been used in India for centuries as an adaptogen, which helps the body adapt to stress and lower cortisol levels. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with insomnia or anxiety. In Ayurveda the herb is called Withania somnifera, and it is also known as Indian Ginseng. The dish below uses ashwagandha as one of the main ingredients:

Ashwagandha (With Onion and Peas)


  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes or small dice. 
  • 1 pc. red onion, sliced thin and diced
  • A cup green peas
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp coriander
  • 3/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste 
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro leaves


  • In a pot, bring water to a boil with 2 cups of water and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder. 
  • Add in the potatoes and cook until they are fork tender, about 10 minutes. 
  • Once the potatoes are done, add in the onion and garlic to fry up for 5 minutes.
  • Add in the green peas, cumin, coriander, turmeric powder and some salt and pepper to taste. 
  • Stir until the onion is translucent. 
  • Turn off the heat and stir in the yogurt until heated through. 
  • Garnish with chopped cilantro leaves if desired.
